WHY DO WE FUNDRAISE?

Operation of a successful high school band program is expensive. A lot of time and energy go into creating and putting on a new show. Music and drill for both the band and the guard must be written, often from scratch. Outside sources are frequently consulted. Directors and associated staff put in extra hours and effort outside of their duties as music instructors at the High School and Junior Highs. All of these individuals deserve compensation for this additional work. There are costs for maintenance of equipment, transportation. flags and guard uniforms. The students in the band have individual needs, such as adequate water and refreshment during games and contests, food on contest days, and food during extended contest activities (such as Bands of America).

Some of these expenses are covered by the Moore School District in the budget allotted the band program. Some of the expenses are covered through the band fees assessed each student. Much is not.

One of the many functions of the Westmoore Band Boosters is to offset costs which are not covered by. and/or in excess of, funds available to the Director. The Westmoore Band Boosters conduct two general types of fundraisers: Band Booster and Individual Student.

Band Booster fundraising: The Boosters, as a group. raise funds to go into the Boosters' general account We generate monies through the operation of concessions at various events (such as OMEA, band contests, etc); by holding an annual golf tournament; by hosting an annual Band Festival; as well as sponsoring other events. These funds are used to provide food, water and refreshments for the band; to transport equipment to and from games and contests; to help maintain equipment (other than the instruments themselves); to pay entry fees for contests; to cover other expenses necessary to ensure the band and guard are adequately outfitted; and to purchase other equipment (such as the screen, sympodium, and projector for the band classroom). The Boosters as a whole decide upon. and conduct. these fundraisers. The 8/it/lw band benefits from these efforts. PARENT PARTICIPATION IS ESSENTIAL TO ENSURE THAT THE FUNDRAISERS ARE SUCCESSFUL.

Individual Student fundraising: Some parents choose to write a check for the expenses associated with their child's participation in band. These fees often include, yet are not limited to, copies of both drill and music; uniform maintenance; instrument maintenance; transportation to and from football games and contests, as well as lodging for extended contest stays. Others choose to participate in individual fundraising opportunities to cover some or all of these costs.

It is entirely up to each parent and child as to how many individual fundraisers they participate in. The Boosters try to arrange a variety of opportunities for students throughout the year. This is done in an effort to appeal to a wider consumer market. Some examples include: Poinsettia sales, candy sales, magazine sales, Pampered Chef sales, as well as several other opportunities. Individuals earn either a percentage of product sales or a predetermined amount per item sold (depending on the fundraiser).

Once all monies are collected from the participating student, the profits are credited to that individual student's account. Those funds are for use exclusively by the individual student for the individual student's appropriate costs and expenses. It is quite possible for a student to raise all of the funds required to participate in band.

Tracey Penka and Jeanne Westbrook organize and coordinate the fundraising opportunities. They welcome your input, questions, and ideas for future fundraisers.
